The Myth of Selling Nutritional Health Supplements Online

mythWhen nutritional health supplement marketers think about how to market their natural products online and get more sales, they usually focus on traffic.

Every website in the world that sells something needs traffic.

And traffic boils down to three buckets of traffic, direct, paid and organic.

Direct traffic are visits that come to your site directly.

This is traffic that is typing in your URL, most marketers think of this traffic as free but it’s really not, it’s just not tracked precisely.

Paid traffic is any traffic that you’re driving to your site that’s costing you money.

Maybe they’re coming from a direct mail piece or banners or pay per click.

One big misconception here is that marketers don’t put email or social media traffic here, even though they are paying for that in other ways, just not paying in a direct visitor or click model. It’s still costing you money to manage a social media campaign and an email campaign, even if it’s just the cost of the task it self or the staff to do it.

Organic traffic is traffic that comes to your site from a web search that shows up that you’re not paid for. Marketers love this kind of traffic. They also think of it as free, even though it’s really not since someone had to write and post the content that is driving the traffic.

But, traffic alone won’t get you sales.

magnetThis is the big myth.

Don’t get me wrong. traffic is the life blood to keep things flowing. And once you have it you can start improving.

But, traffic is only one component of success, getting people to your site is necessary but if 98% (based on an average ecommerce conversion rate of 2%) of those people are just getting there and not buying or signing up or completing whatever your conversion goal you have for your website, you’re leaving money on the table. Money that could be yours, by improving your website conversion rate.

No one has a traffic problem.

If you do then you simply need to buy the right traffic.

The smart nutritional health and supplement marketer focus on something else entirely…

Smart marketers focus on conversions…

Focusing on conversion means you’re maximizing the traffic you already have, not driving more and in fact you’re reducing the paid traffic that’s not converting.

You see it’s not about driving more people to your website. This is a hope strategy. You’re hoping that if you brought more people in  then more of them might buy. And honestly if you brought in enough visitors some of them might buy. This was the strategy of online sales 10 – 15 years ago. But with an increase in competition online it’s getting more and more expensive to bring that traffic in and more and more people are seeking out alternatives and price shopping online.

The smart health and supplement marketer is now focusing on conversion optimization.

Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) is the practice of increasing the amount of online sales and leads on a website, without increasing the amount of web visitors.

By optimizing or improving your web conversion rate you can get more people to take more action without spending money on attracting more visits to your landing page or website.

You’re optimizing for buying by focusing on a customer centric posture. By making systematic changes and improvements to your site that resonate with your visitors. How do yo undo this? you simply let them tell you what changes and tweaks are contributing to more sales by tracking the changes and effects with your bottom line sales. That’s what conversion rate optimization (CRO) is all about. Not simply adding more eyeballs but optimizing those eye balls to buy more.
